Student Support

Moving from a school environment to a Sixth Form College is an exciting time. Life in a sixth form college is fast-moving and challenging, and we are very keen to take great care to ensure that all of you have the individual support that you need and that your individual needs are met.

At Rochdale Sixth Form College, we also recognise that a new environment and the move to a sixth form college can be a little daunting. With this in mind we aim to build on the highly successful work carried out by our 11-16 partner schools and ensure the transition to sixth form life is as smooth as possible for you.

We aim to offer powerful one-to-one support in a variety of ways:

Personal Progress Tutors

You will have a Personal Progress Tutor who will closely monitor your academic progress, and encourage you to achieve your potential throughout your time at college. Your Personal Progress Tutor is the one person who will have an overview of your academic and personal development and ensure that you are on track throughout your time at college, so as you move successfully to the next stage of your career.

Target Setting & Progress Review

The college target setting and progress review system is based upon regular and formalised one-to-one interviews with your subject teachers and your Personal Progress Tutor. The learning conversations you have with your staff will allow you to be clear on how you are currently performing in each subject and precisely what you have to do to move forward to the next level. This means that you are clear at all times whether you are on track to reach your goals.

Extra Help with Your Learning

During your time with us, there will come a time when you need that additional support and help with your studies. It might be with an individual subject, perhaps a topic you find challenging, or you may need help with study skills in general. Much of this support and help will come from your class teachers and Personal Progress Tutor; however, you can seek help from the learning resource and study centre.

Progression and the Next Step

Time will fly at Sixth Form College, and you will be applying for university or employment before you know it!  Before you arrive at the point when you preparing applications, we ensure that we have helped you identify your true interests and how they may develop in to future career paths. This process will be new to you all; however, you will receive comprehensive expert advice on higher education, university choices and employment pathways.

Keeping on Track!

You can be assured that if you are experiencing difficulties in any capacity – be it your studies or personal issues during your time at RSFC, not only do you have your Personal Progress Tutor by your side, but the college has mentors and personal advisors from the Connexions Service to offer advice and where necessary co-ordinate the involvement of external agencies. In essence, we will work as hard as we can to help you overcome any problems that you may face.

Academic Stretch and Challenge

We want all students who join us to have genuine aspirations to be the best they can and progress in to a career that you really does satisfy you. We want to prepare you for the competitive world that we live in. At RSFC we will prepare those of you with the highest aspirations for the competitive universities in the country. You will benefit from individual preparation, master classes and thorough interview preparation. The Extended Project Qualification will be available to give you enhanced preparation for university study.

Funding

EMA (Education Maintenance Allowance) is a scheme providing young people who wish to continue in education after school leaving age with an incentive to earn awards through good attendance and achieving agreed learning objectives. EMA is dependent on your household’s annual income.

As well as getting money to help you stay on, you will also have a Learning Agreement with RSFC. This agreement will tell you what you need to achieve in order to stay on the EMA scheme, and get your weekly awards and bonus payments. If you meet the attendance and performance objectives that you agreed with RSFC, you can earn bonus payments on top of your EMA
