AS/A2 Music

Why do Music?

If you are a musician interested in music analysis, history, performing and composing then this is the subject for you. You will learn techniques that composers use to write music and develop these into your own compositions. This subject is suitable for experienced performers who have a high level of musical theory knowledge. This course will allow you to develop your knowledge and understanding of classical music through in-depth study and analysis.

What will I study?

In the first year, you will develop your instrumental technique and the ability to emotionally interpret details of your chosen pieces. You will explore performance both as a soloist and within an ensemble. During composition lessons, you will learn about the capabilities of different instruments and will develop the ability to compose effectively for them. Finally, you will develop your listening skills and stylistic awareness through regular listening exercises and the analysis of set works. You will participate in a range of activities including live performance of solo and ensemble repertoire. You will also compose for a string quartet or piano trio and will use the purpose built studio to make professional recordings. In the second year you will compose in different styles, study new set pieces and further develop the skills learnt in the first year.

The extra stuff at RSFC

Students of Music will be working with high quality instruments and well-equipped rehearsal spaces with state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, all music students will benefit from private instrumental tuition outside of the timetable to improve their performance skills. There will also be opportunities to take part in workshops, recitals, college productions and to attend concerts throughout the year. Enrichment activities will include various bands/ensembles, a college choir and music technology.

What can I do with Music after college?

The course would be ideal preparation for a classical music degree either at university or at a specialist music school such as the RNCM. Career options in music include performer, composer, musical director, teacher and music critic.

What do I need to do Music?

You will need to meet the normal college entry criteria for AS/A2 courses. In addition, you should be able to read notation fluently and have experience of both studying and performing music at Grade 5 Level or above.
