Why do Music Technology?

Are you interested in exploring new ideas and taking risks? Do you have a good musical ear? This course is designed to allow you to study music through music technology. It recognises technology in music as a way of music making in its own right. It is aimed at musicians who want to recreate traditional music and musicians who want to exploit the potential of technology in creating new music. This course is designed to develop understanding of the techniques and processes involved in Music Production through the study and use of Digital Recording, MIDI and Audio sequencing, Sampling and Synthesis and Mixing Equipment.

What will I study?

You will study a number of areas including the principles and practice of music technology, the development of music styles since 1910 and the development of technology based music. The course involves both practical and written work, involving listening, analysing and producing. Practical work may include a sequenced realised performance, a multi track recording and creative sequenced arrangement.

As well as having access to first class music technology equipment and facilities, you will be strongly encouraged to participate in subject-related enrichment activities including instrumental lessons and additional tutorials using music technology equipment and software. You will also have the opportunity to attend any regular visits, workshops and residential trips that may be offered throughout the year.

What can I do with Music Technology after college?

On completion of this course, many students choose to progress to the wide range of specialist music technology and recording courses that are available throughout the country. Job roles in this sector include studio technician and music producer. Students may go on to study Music Technology and Media courses at University and have pursued careers in Audio Production, Music Video Production, Sound Design, Music Industry Management, Music Publishing and Audio Forensics in the Police force.

What do I need to do Music Technology?

You will need to meet normal college entry criteria for AS/A2 courses. You need to be able to play an instrument or be a singer and be prepared to brush up on your knowledge of other styles of music.
