AS Use of Mathematics

Use of Maths

Why study Use of Mathematics?

This is a new qualification, which consists of three maths units. This is an ideal qualification for a student who has an interest in maths and recognises how useful and valuable a subject is, but who do not meet the entry criteria for a traditional AS/A2 Maths course. The course focuses on the application of maths to everyday situations and so is an ideal choice to combine with any subject. Half of the course is assessed by a portfolio of evidence and so is not exam based.

What will I study?

You will study the following topics:

  • Working with Algebraic and Graphical Techniques – In this unit you look at real life problems and examine algebraic and graphical methods of modelling and solving these problems.
  • Using and Applying Statistics – This is a useful unit for students on other courses where data is collected and analysed. Students studying Psychology or Biology for example could use data collected from these courses in their assignments for this unit.
  • Applying Mathematics – This unit is designed to give you an understanding of basic maths techniques and the language required for problem solving.
