What are AS/A Levels?

  • There are two parts to each A-level qualification. AS (advanced subsidiary) units – you study these in the first year of your A level course. Most subjects have two AS units, although some have three. If you pass the AS units in a subject, you will gain an AS qualification – this is called an AS level. A total of 50% of the marks for the full A level are awarded to the AS qualification.
  • A2 units – you study these in the second year of your course. Most A levels have two units although, some have three.
  • It is possible to take an AS level without going on to complete the full A level.
  • An AS level pass is awarded a grade from A to E.
  • An A2 level pass is awarded a grade from A* to E.

Applied AS/A levels

  • Applied AS/A levels have a work related focus and are available in single or double awards – double awards are equivalent to two A levels.
  • An AS level pass is awarded a grade from A to E.
  • An A2 level pass is awarded a grade from A* to E.
